How Strava Runs Faster NDAs and Connects Teams with Ironclad

Ironclad stood out from the rest because of the user interface and the level of attention and care that we received from the team.
Solving the contracting challenge, no questions asked
When Kristen first joined Strava as Commercial Counsel in mid-2019, the company’s contracts were mostly managed over email and it was becoming harder for the small legal team to track all the moving parts.
A popular app loved by athletes, Strava serves over 60 million users and sees about a million new users join every month. Contracts are essential to the company’s impressive growth, from building partnerships to purchasing services.
Before Ironclad, high-volume contracts like NDAs were becoming increasingly taxing as the business grew. “We wanted to stay on top of each particular need,” said Kristen. “Even if you have a perfect process in place, high volumes of contracts make it challenging to remember, when do you loop in finance, and when do you loop in the executive team?”
Strava’s lean legal team knew it needed faster and more collaborative contracting. “We knew we needed to have a contract management system in place, no questions asked,” Kristen said.
Having an NDA-specific workflow in Ironclad has been crucial because it’s made the process much faster for our internal partners.
Faster and smarter contracting in two months
Kristen and the rest of the legal team set out to find the best contract management for Strava using prior experience and independent research. “I’ve evaluated contract management systems in the past, which made it easier for me to narrow down our choices after I became more familiar with Strava’s business,” said Kristen.
Above all, the legal team needed a solution that would provide high visibility and be straightforward to use. Given its business needs, the team wanted to avoid any solution that would be challenging to customize.
“We wanted something that the vast majority of our internal business users can easily use without extensive training or having to ask ‘Do I select this?’ ‘How do I answer that question?,'” Kristen explained. “Those friction points can be a barrier to adoption, and we wanted something that would be welcoming.”
Ironclad caught the team’s attention. “Ironclad stood out from the rest because of the user interface and the level of attention and care that we received from the team,” Kristen noted. “The support was and continues to be a differentiator.” Ironclad not only satisfied the team’s key criteria, but was uniquely understanding of Strava’s specific needs.
After choosing Ironclad in June 2019, Strava was able to implement the platform in as little as two months. “We had company-wide support during implementation, since our teams knew it would make the contracting process easier on them,” Kristen said.
Ironclad helped with not only the management piece, but also the efficiency and effectiveness needed for our lean legal team.
Making collaboration a breeze with Ironclad
How has contracting at Strava changed since adopting Ironclad?
The legal team has launched hundreds of NDAs using Workflow Designer. “Having an NDA-specific workflow in Ironclad has been crucial because it’s made the process much faster for our internal partners to get up and running with a project,” Kristen told us.
Ironclad has made collaboration with the rest of the company a breeze. “On a team-wide level, it’s been wonderful to have the ability to loop in every member from the legal team or finance team as needed and manage all the questions, negotiation, approval and signature in one place,” Kristen noted. “Having everything in Ironclad makes life so much easier.”
Dynamic Repository helps make it possible for me to spend more of my time actually practicing law. I love how easy it is to search and empower others to do so.
And for Kristen?
Ironclad’s greatest impact has been the newfound visibility and centralization. “I can see everything in one place and point everyone in the same direction,” said Kristen. “I get questions from so many different channels, but at the end of the day I only have to say ‘Great! Please put that in Ironclad.'” Having metrics such as changes in contract volume month-to-month and the time to execute deals also allows Kristen to provide insights to the rest of the company.
Kristen’s favorite feature, however, has been Dynamic Repository. “We are a smaller company, so having the searchable repository available to our business units is crucial to reducing requests to locate contracts or confirm their details,” Kristen said.
With Ironclad, Strava’s legal team has been armed with the tool to not only succeed in their work but also effectively support the rest of the company. As Kristen noted, “Ironclad helped with not only the management piece, but also the efficiency and effectiveness needed for our lean legal team.”
