In January, we launched the inaugural Legal AI Innovators Award to recognize the trailblazers leveraging artificial intelligence to solve real-world legal challenges. Today, we’re thrilled to announce the winners who exemplify how AI is reshaping the legal profession.

The legal industry’s relationship with artificial intelligence has evolved from cautious curiosity to productive partnership. In immigration courts drowning in case backlogs, in law firms where lawyers are trying to maximize their output for clients, at corporate legal departments buried under contract reviews, and within state judicial systems lacking transparency, AI has moved beyond novelty to necessity. Our winners are driving this shift, developing solutions that are already reshaping how justice is delivered, how risks are managed, and how courts are held accountable. Their work represents not just technological achievement but a fundamental reimagining of what legal practice can become.

First place: Mobile Pathways – AI-powered immigration justice

Team: Jeffrey O’Brien Esquire – Executive Director, Ben Mann – Chief Data Officer, and Ana Luz Ortega Villegas – Program Director

Mobile Pathways took home first place with their groundbreaking Pathfinder platform, which addresses the overwhelming challenges facing the immigration court system.

With nearly 4 million people navigating immigration courts—a staggering 779% increase over the last decade—and limited resources for legal representation, countless immigrants face a fast-changing immigration landscape that requires up-to-date knowledge of the system in order to navigate. Mobile Pathways has responded by creating an AI solution that synthesizes over 200 million data points from the immigration process and instantly compiles detailed legal histories and employment authorization eligibility for immigrants in court.

Since launching in September 2024, Pathfinder has been accessed more than 200,000 times by over 100 organizations, with five new organizations onboarding weekly. What makes their solution particularly remarkable is how it combines technological innovation with social impact. By equipping communities with critical insights, Mobile Pathways continues to contribute meaningfully to the discourse on immigration justice.

Second place: Kinaxis Inc. – talking to contracts with FluKsAI

Team: Paul Mason – Director, IT Application Excellence and Santiago Ugarte Salas, Intern Developer, IT Application Excellence

Kinaxis claimed second-place with FluKsAI, an innovative AI tool developed during their annual corporate hackathon in just one week.

Facing challenges with poor contract metadata and the need to efficiently review approximately 1,500 active contracts for risk-related queries, the Kinaxis team created a solution that allows their employees to “talk to their contracts.” The webapp uses generative AI to search all contracts simultaneously based on whatever criteria is needed—from risk assessment to compliance requirements.

The implementation is impressively robust: a self-hosted .NET webapp with an SQL database repository, a Linux server storing chunked embeddings in a vector database for semantic searches, and the OpenAI API for advanced natural language queries. The system is integrated with Okta SSO to provide a secure, closed environment that protects sensitive contract data.

The tool has accelerated productivity and filled a major gap in the legal team’s processes, preparing them for audit, compliance, business, and regulatory requests for contract information. Perhaps most tellingly, the team reports that the project “helped show a bunch of lawyers that AI is their friend.”

Third Place: Scrutinize – bringing transparency to state courts

Team: Oded Oren – Founder and Executive Director

Scrutinize earned third place with their innovative application of AI to promote transparency and accountability in state courts.

Previously, analyzing state court data relied on manual reviews by legal experts—a labor-intensive process that severely limited scalability. The non-profit Scrutinize developed a novel two-step AI methodology using GPT models to analyze appellate decisions. First, GPT-3.5 generates summaries of decisions. Then, GPT-4 determines whether the decisions overturned lower court rulings on specific issues, such as constitutional violations.

This approach achieved a remarkable 99% accuracy rate while reducing analysis time from tens of hours to just a few, enabling large-scale evaluation of judicial decisions at a fraction of the cost. To maintain high accuracy, they process each decision five times and conduct manual reviews for cases lacking consensus.

Scrutinize’s innovation is particularly impactful because it sheds light on state court decisions that shape the lives of millions. By making court operations transparent and accessible, their AI solution plays a vital role in rebuilding trust in democratic institutions and safeguarding constitutional rights.

AI is transforming legal—right now

What these winners demonstrate is that AI isn’t just poised to change the legal industry in the future—it’s actively transforming it as we speak. These aren’t speculative use cases or experimental pilots – they’re real implementations driving measurable impact today.

The common thread among these winners is a clear focus on solving specific, high-impact problems. Rather than deploying AI for its own sake, they identified persistent challenges where traditional approaches fell short and leveraged AI’s unique capabilities to address them.

We’d also like to thank our amazing panel of judges for not only taking time to evaluate entries, but for themselves being true pioneers of AI in legal and driving innovation in their respective fields.

Once again, congratulations to our winners, and to all who submitted their innovations! You’re not just using new technology—you’re redefining what’s possible in legal practice and we can’t wait to see where you take innovation next

Until next year!
